An infectious disease expert on Thursday floated the possibility of the local transmission of the COVID-19 Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 with its first case in the Philippines detected in a Filipino with no recent travel history.
Dr. Edsel Salvana, who is also a member of the Department of Health Technical Advisory Group for Infectious Disease, said this after DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire disclosed on Tuesday that the first case of the most contagious Omicron subvariant was a local detection and had unknown exposure.
Currently, the Philippines has detected three cases of the XBB.1.5, after two additional cases were found on the genome sequence results released from February 7 to February 9.
