The shocking Hamas-led assault on Israeli border towns on Saturday comes amid a year that has seen an unprecedented rise in violence against Palestinians across the occupied territories. Hours after the incursion began, Muhammed Deif, the commander of Hamas’s armed wing, issued a statement justifying the operation as a necessary response to the Israeli occupation, including escalated Israeli military and settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
That figure surpasses the 158 Palestinians killed in all of 2022, which before 2023 was the deadliest year in the West Bank since the United Nations began systematically recording casualties in 2005, the year of the most recent Palestinian uprising. The vast majority of deaths recorded this year came at the hands of Israeli forces, though seven were committed by Israeli settlers and two by other armed Israelis.
