Patrick Simmons, who wrote and sings perhaps the most beloved Doobie Brothers song of all time, “Black Water,” even changed the lyrics for one night.The show opened just after 8 p.m. Michael McDonald, the group’s lead voice during its Grammy-winning “What a Fool Believes” resurgence in the late 1970s, played keyboards as Simmons and guitarist/violinist John McFee walked out and began a guitar duet.
With Johnston, Simmons and McDonald taking turns on lead vocals, the group covered a half century of musical highlights for its long-delayed 50th anniversary tour that had been disrupted by the pandemic. The Doobie Brothers drop an ‘Alabama moon’ into ‘Black Water’ during their Birmingham concert Friday night at Oak Mountain.
