Tournament organizers could move next year's event off of Easter week to include San Diego city schools are out

For more than 70 years — from every game at Navy Field, to doubleheaders at school sites and chili dogs at Hoover High School, to championship games on college campuses — the Lions Baseball Tournament has been a Monday-through-Thursday staple of Easter Week.That may all change next season.“Not every school has spring break at the same time like they used to,” said Peter Gallagher, the retired San Diego Superior Court Judge who has been chairman of the Lions Tournament since 2012.

“So if I have San Diego Unified and one or two other districts out, I’m ahead of the game,” Gallagher said. “And City Schools gives me some really nice fields … Madison, University City, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Scripps Ranch.”edition of the Lions Tournament features 140 teams over nine divisions. It’s among the oldest and largest tournaments in the country.

“I think it would be a mistake to move the tournament,” said James Davis, head coach at Granite Hills. “You’re talking about 70 years of tradition, so I’d hate to go a different route. Dave Gallegos, coach at Eastlake, has been a friend of the Lions Tournament, hosting doubleheaders when the Titans are out of school.

“After that there was a travel rule when schools had to be contiguous to San Diego,” Gallagher said. “So we were down to about 80 teams.
