It’s something that critics of Lilly’s work have long decried about her brand of comedy. Writer and anti-oppression consultant McKensie Mack took on the subject in their viral 2017 essay “.” In the piece, McKensie argues that Lilly’s comedy is indicative of non-Black people performing Blackness. In the two years since they wrote it though, McKensie says they’ve come to look at the issue a little differently — it’s really about non-black people of color performing anti-blackness.
“It’s the blackface without the actual painting of the face,” McKensie told me on the phone. “[It’s] amplifying their idea of Blackness as they perceive it, and at the end of the day it’s a joke.
