Matthew Leifheit’s photo collection “To Die Alive” captures the erotic glamour, camp, and mourning of Fire Island.
The name is the first thing to announce itself: a landmass ablaze, its flames tracing back to tales of beaches lit by swamp fires or Native American signals to the mainland. Other accounts suggest that Fire Island is so called because of a centuries-old transcription error, a misspelling of “five” or, the Dutch word for “four,” for its onetime position in a sequence of barrier islands.
Leifheit captures this camp element in perhaps its highest form at the Belvedere Guest House, a Baroque-style palace that sits on the bay side of Cherry Grove. Male-only and clothing-optional, it is a place where many Fire Island nights begin and end. Leifheit’s beguiling photographs take us through different rooms in the hotel, showcasing their faded glamour and inviting viewers to witness intimate scenes.
