National Geographic’s A Small Light is the story of Miep Gies, the Dutch woman who hid Anne Frank and her family, among others, for just over two years. The powerful story is brought to life in part by showrunners Joan Rater and Tony Phelan and director Susanna Fogel who, in an interview with Screen Rant, made it clear that they wanted to share Gies’ life in a new and engaging way.

A Small Light Shines Thanks To Its Modern Tone The tone of the above clip may initially seem incongruous with the idea of a show about what happened to Anne Frank and her family. Gies in A Small Light is headstrong, impatient, and even flighty until she chooses to take on a responsibility that would forever change her life. For telling this incredible story in such a way, A Small Light has the chance to not only raise awareness about Gies, but also to inspire viewers to follow her example.
A Small Light premieres on May 1st on National Geographic, and will then be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
