at Canada Life Centre. Hajek drew into the lineup in place of the 21-year-old Zac Jones on the third defensive pairing, next to Braden Schneider. After serving in a pure depth role that was limited even further by the Rangers’ good fortune with injuries, Hajek has come into the 2022-23 season looking to land a job on the bottom pair. It appeared Jones had won the spot out of training camp with some solid preseason performances.
The fact that Jones was scratched Friday does not necessarily mean he has lost the job to Hajek. It was not the first time Gallant has opted to scratch a young defenseman in one game of a back-to-back schedule.
