I never thought I would say this, but I am proud of President Joe Biden. His unwavering support of Ukraine is correct for many reasons, not the least of which is to suppress the expansion of the autocratic thugocracy that is Russia at this time. Apparently Biden, unlike many members of the far-right GOP, knows that it’s better to stop tyranny on someone else’s soil than on your own, and that appeasement never, ever works.
I would like to challenge our Legislature to use a small portion of the $30 billion they want to use for property tax breaks to buy this park and save it for all to enjoy.Vistra Energy and predecessors enjoyed a sweetheart deal with the state for decades in the form of guaranteed rates for power generation. Agreed, the state should have acted sooner to buy the land. Now it has one last opportunity to preserve a valuable public resource. We should not pass up this opportunity.
Why am I sharing this? The great state of Texas could be doing the very same thing over time. It takes vision. It takes planning. It takes allocation of resources year over year. I see Texas having “pocket parks” with parkland being as small as 500 acres or 1,000 acres. Texas has generated billions of dollars in surplus funds. How much money do we have allocated for park acquisitions? Right now?
Developers will salivate over the chance to build high-density housing/apartments at elevated rents . It’s already happening in Deep Ellum and East Dallas .
