The writer of this letter asserted that “Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the presidency” for two years and yet did nothing to pass a ban on semi-automatic weapons. A ban on semi-automatic “assault style” weapons was passed by the House in July 2022. But the 60 votes necessary to bring it to a vote in the Senate were not there. Perhaps the writer is not aware of the filibuster rule in the Senate. To control the Senate would require a 60-vote majority.
