Columbus Day is here and with its arrival comes the usual rhetoric about perpetuating this holiday.
Columbus Day is about the American immigrant experience, an experience that continues to make the United States the greatest nation on earth. As a first-generation college student in the 1960s at Stephen F. Austin University, I was impressed by the quote on the statue of Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, “The cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy.”
