The fact Germany in the 1930s and ‘40s and the Soviet Union took the path of suppressing contrary or nonconforming opinions and points of view should be enough to show this is not a path to take. If an opinion or point of view is “correct,” so to speak, it will hold up to critical analysis and scrutiny. Banning contrary opinions or views is actually harmful. If an opinion or point of view does not hold up to critical analysis or scrutiny, then we have to consider we might be wrong, or that there is simply no “correct” answer.Re: “This Is No Way to Keep Teachers — Students’ misbehavior, ineffective responses are driving instructors out of classrooms,” Sunday editorial.
Such behavior may not be illegal but it should bear consequences of other kinds like what Harvard meted out to these applicants.As an elderly mother of six adult children, I have strong opinions on this subject. Of course, there won’t be just one solution. That said, my take is that if mothers who can possibly keep their children out of the day care system until kindergarten and instill moral values would be doing their children a lifetime favor. And society a service.
I am now a retired high school English teacher. I, too, experienced students who did not belong in a mainstream classroom. If we don’t overhaul the nation’s school system expeditiously, we will eventually be unable to staff schools, especially in our marginalized communities. In a nutshell, a voucher system might just be the solution to a failing system.Re: “Discipline begins at home,” Kay Wrobel, Sunday Letters.
