The reason for this is obvious: there is no permanent way to securely store the most dangerous waste human beings have ever produced. The updated Policy for Radioactive Waste and Decommissioning seeks only “to ensure the safe, effective and environmentally sound management of waste.” But since nuclear waste remains hazardous in perpetuity there is no way to ensure anything, except possibly our demise.
