The world’s two most famous Latinas stunned Anglo and Hispanic audiences alike in larger-than-life performance

For their grand finale, Lopez and Shakira repurposed the stadium-size, 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem “Waka Waka ” — adapted from the Cameroonian band, Golden Sounds, and revamped for America. After a closing champeta segment and vigorous butt shake, the pop divas topped off with one big, genuine bear hug of triumph.
Yet as much as this game has further aggravated divisions in the United States — it’s impossible to play down the fact that for 15 fleeting minutes, hundreds of millions of eyes were on Latinas. And not just Latinas, but Latinas getting. Latinas, both mothers, confidently basking in their sexuality. Latinas speaking out against the abuse of migrants.
