After meeting at a Greenpeace dinner, Christophe Lemaire and Veja’s Sébastien Kopp teamed up to design cool, casual sneakers made from recycled plastic and organic canvas.

At a dinner for Greenpeace, Veja cofounder Sébastien Kopp was seated next to Christophe Lemaire, who turned out to be a kindred spirit. “We started chatting, and it was all very natural,” Kopp tells. “He told me that he really loved and respected what we were doing with Veja. A few of my friends had worked with him at Hermès, and I knew of his righteousness and his commitment, but that night I also met his kindness and humility.
Over the next few months, that something became a small capsule of sneakers—Veja’s bread and butter, yet a relatively new category for Lemaire. Of the two Veja x Lemaire sneakers, one is a high-top inspired by an Italian military trainer and the other is a slip-on “aqua shoe”; it looks a bit like a skate sneaker, but more sculptural. “We were interested in developing a mix of diving shoes and Chinese slippers,” Lemaire says.
“I love divers and slippers,” Kopp adds. “The neoprene, the elasticity—we used new technology that we developed in Brazil to 3-D knit recycled plastic. This mix created a whole new kind of sneaker [that’s] light, perfect for summer, and enhances the Lemaire silhouettes.” In other words: It’s the perfect sneaker to wear with one of Lemaire’s relaxed, gently oversize suits.
The 3-D–knitting technology also means the slip-on is virtually zero waste; in fact, given the recycled plastic upper, its carbon footprint might be in the negatives. The high-top sneaker wasn’t knitted, but uses the same organic cotton canvas you’ll find on the low-top sneakers in Veja’s main line. Kopp teased a few new technologies and materials for 2019 . “Veja’s business model has been built on this concept of sustainability,” Lemaire says.
