The Inventing Anna actress is working on her physical and mental health as she approaches a new decade.
“It’s a miracle that I’m a Black transgender woman from Mobile, Alabama, who has managed to not just survive, but thrive,” she said. “I've had a lot of guilt around that because I'm aware that there are a lot of Black trans people who are suffering. I've had to let go of that. I'm insanely grateful. I have to enjoy it. Life is too short.”
The actress said she supports her mental health by unplugging from the news and finding things that bring her joy. She added that one of the six skills of the, a process developed through the Trauma Research Institute, is “resourcing.” This entails leaning into things that make you feel good and bring you happiness.
“It might be a song. It might be the thought of a person. I’ll think about my boyfriend cooking breakfast for me and I just light up inside. We have to lean into those things that bring us joy. And the things that don’t, we need to let them go to protect our mental health,” she said. Additionally, Cox has always been very open about working with a therapist to work through her trauma, help her find that joy, and feel worthy of the love and life she has. And when things feel a bit too overwhelming for the star, she uses tricks to help ground herself. The actress likes to focus on her breath and feel her feet grounded on the floor. She also uses scents like lavender and vanilla or snuggles into a fuzzy robe to calm herself during stressful periods.
