Essential workers at LAUSD want raises, arguing that they went from COVID heroes to zeros.
Thousands of cafeteria workers, bus drivers, janitors and special education assistants could soon be walking off of LAUSD campuses if the district is unable to reach a contract agreement.
LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said in a recent interview that he is committed to getting wage raises for all district staff that would be equal to, and ideally greater than, the rate of inflation.“Los Angeles Unified is committed to fair and equitable negotiations that offset the pressures of inflation for all employees who serve our students and schools.
After many risked their health working during the pandemic and received no raise for the 2020-2021 school year, frustration among union members is mounting. Carvalho said that the district is willing to “put more resources on the table.” However, he noted that while thewith pandemic relief money and boosted state revenues, this will not be able to cover wage increases in the long term — especially with a possible recession looming.
Marisol Aguilar, a 15-year special education worker with the district, said that the limited hours and no pay during school breaks makes it extremely difficult to cover expenses.
