The 2022\u002D23 Saskatchewan Youth Poet Laureate is a teacher at Oskayak High School who helps youth connect to themselves and their communities
“You get to see all these youth connect with each other, build new friendships, meet new people in the community. But also seeing the youth — with their stories — impact others. They have poems that resonate with people.”
“She’s very warm, caring and kind, and that contributes to students just opening up to her,” says Oskāyak High School principal Ted View. “Understanding their identities through the anti-oppressive lens gives them something to reflect on in their own lives and hopefully learn more about their identities.”“It’s cool to use my own set of skills with poetry to bring that into their learning experience and to use that to inspire them or use different methods of teaching,” she says.
Oskāyak also has a student fiddle club, which Klassen co-runs with View, having learned to play the fiddle in her own community school. Now, she is relearning the instrument alongside her students. “I had such a strong sense of community from since I was a kid in school to now. I had a lot of connections in the community,” she recalls.
Klassen also sits on a few boards for youth-supporting organizations: Sum Theatre hosts Theatre in the Park and encourages youth to explore theatre and art; and Core Neighbourhood Youth Co Op, a Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools organization, supports youth in the community, helping them to achieve success.Article content
