TheLastOfUs behind-the-scenes image shows the practical effects used to create the scary Bloater in episode 5.
A disgusting The Last of Us image shows a close and personal look at the monstrous Bloater from episode 5. Episode 5 saw Joel and Ellie partner with Henry and his little brother Sam as the four tries to escape violent insurrectionists in Kansas City. Eventually, Kathleen and her troops cornered them, but they soon became bombarded by a horde of infected from a sinkhole. Among the swarming infected was a Bloater, which became a talking point on the internet, given its hulking grotesque imagery.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Stunt performer Adam Basil recently shared on Instagram behind-the-scenes images of his role as the fearsome Bloater in The Last of Us episode 5. The actor gives thanks to the work of the HBO show's prosthetics designer Barrie Gower, prosthetic makeup artist Duncan Jarman, as well as the puppet and creature maker company Stitches and Glue and their staff members Pauly Vincett and Becky Johnson.
Such dedication is evident in HBO's The Last of Us, as the set design, costuming, and visual effects were praised for giving the look and feel of the world on-screen. Part of the success is the practical effects that give the infected's realistic image, as evident from the set photos. The HBO show reportedly had a bigger budget than Game of Thrones, which likely helped bring a higher design quality for the infected, including making the prosthetics for the Bloater and Clickers.
HBO's The Last of Us shows that real sets, costumes, and practical effects still eclipse the reliance on CGI. When working in tandem, the desired effect is achieved with outstanding results. Physically recreating Clickers from the game also allows the actors to properly emote, as it is more difficult to act against a green screen with performance artists in motion capture suits.
