A large fire at a New Jersey chemical plant continued to burn Saturday morning, as more than 200 firefighters battled to keep the flames away from chlorine stored at the facility.
Flames reached around 100,000 pounds of chlorine pellets, prompting a reverse-911 call to surrounding residents urging them to keep their windows closed. Were flames to reach the chlorine in the main part of the plant, toxic fumes could force firefighters to leave the scene and nearby residents to evacuate, Mr. Lora said. The plant sits across the street from Speer Village, a 900-family public-housing complex.
