The Omeires say they want the paraprofessional removed from her position, alleging their son was injured while under her care. The parents of a 5-year-old Rosenberg boy with autism are criticizing Lamar CISD’s response to a September incident captured on security video in which an elementary school staff member carried the child to a small room and kept him behind a closed door.
The video footage shows the boy tackling another child in a classroom, then the staff member carries the boy into a small room off-camera where his cries are audible through the door.In a statement, the district said it reassigned the staff member who carried the boy to the room and the staffer no longer works with students.
The district cannot provide information regarding therapy services provided to students, Cole-Hamilton said. The Omeires, whose son is now in a program for children with autism at another elementary school in the district, said they did not receive notice of the incident on Sept. 15 when the boy came home with the injured toe. The child's autism prevented him from communicating what had happened, Rose Omeire said.
Omeire said her son was visibly shaken and would not let the lights be turned off or any doors be closed the night of the incident. The child did not return to school the next day and was afraid to go to the emergency room for four days afterward, she said. "I'm hoping Lamar will take care of my child's psychological trauma, his stuttering and his fear," Rose Omiere said."When he got to his new school, they told me he was so afraid of all the teachers."
