Due to calls into the city, the Lakewood Animal Safety & Welfare Advisory Board recently reminded residents via social media that red foxes may visit their backyards.

“We’ve had some communication here at the mayor’s office of a few sightings, so our animal control officers addressed them,” Lakewood Mayor Meghan George said.

For the record, the mayor said she hasn’t seen any red foxes in her yard, but that’s probably because the sly mammals aren’t parading around. “They’re usually not seen because they’re more nocturnal. Very rarely do you see them during the day. They’re very shy, very timid. You’re lucky to see them.”He estimated there are anywhere from 10 to 50 in Lakewood located mostly along the Lake Erie coast.

Roadway deaths are on the rise, despite data suggesting new cars are saferRoadway deaths are on the rise, despite data suggesting new cars are saferGovernment test data shows new passenger vehicles in the U.S. are extremely safe, but roadway deaths are steadily rising. Some of the biggest increases are deaths of pedestrians and cyclists. That surge has coincided with a steep rise in sales of SUVs and pickup trucks. Experts say the height and boxy front ends of many of those vehicles create large blind spots. They also hit pedestrians higher in the body than sedans, meaning hits more often result in serious injury or death. U.S. safety ratings only consider the safety of people inside a vehicle. But a coalition of transportation safety groups wants the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin factoring the safety of those outside vehicles into its 5-star safety ratings.
