Veteran Lake Station Clerk-Treasurer Brenda Samuels is waging her final campaign for the office against Republican Pat Alexander, a former clerk’s office employee.
“This will be my last term, if I win,” said Samuels who won election in 2007 and served from 2008 to 2015. She lost the 2015 primary to Joe Castellanos, who entered office with a wave of new Democrats who won city council seats after the public corruption conviction of Democratic mayor Keith Soderquist. Castellanos died in 2018 and a Democratic caucus selected Samuels to complete his term. She won a full second term in 2019. Pat Alexander is the wife of city GOP chairman Randy Alexander Sr.
If elected, Alexander said she would partner with local universities to see if students could write grants for the clerk’s office to bring upgrades. She also said she would institute a dress code for employees. “They wear blue jeans, sweatshirts and hoodies. Maybe I’m old school, but especially when you represent government, there should be more of a business experience.” Samuels said the she relaxed the dress code after the COVID-19 pandemic when City Hall wasn’t open to the public.
