An influx of women and non-binary participants haveon the sport over the years, but there’s still work to be done to make skateboarding more inclusive of all those who want to enter it. Lacey, who uses they/them pronouns and identifies as queer, sent a message at the 2019 X Games: It’s time to make space for LGBTQ individuals in skateboarding.
“The biggest message that I’m sending is about authenticity and really being yourself,” Lacey said. “For me, I’m existing in this queer body, and not identifying with the gender I was assigned with at birth. I’m on a platform where I can speak out about that stuff, and I’m using my privilege to hopefully broaden the horizons for the LGBTQ+ community to come, especially in skateboarding.”
Although Lacey has carved a space for themself and, hopefully, other LGBTQ skateboarders to come, their journey certainly didn’t happen overnight. Prior to signing with Nike, Lacey had long felt a need to conform, and explained that sponsors pressured them to dress more feminine and portray themselves in a certain manner. At first, Lacey conformed, but then, they changed. “As I got older, I started doing whatever I wanted to do,” they said.
