Eleven-year-old Karl Halkett has been coming to the club since February after his mom heard about it on Facebook.
Kristin Dunn was inspired to start the trans social club when she joined the Piwapan Women’s Centre as its holistic sexuality outreach worker last year. “There was one young person who was attending who, for the first time, got to be in a social setting where their correct pronouns were used and their chosen name was in use,” said Dunn. “And we even got to practise with that person’s parent, who came along.”Article content
“And I hadn’t even considered that it might be important for some community members who are just home visiting.” Kristin Dunn shares a cuddle with her dog Minzi, who has become the unofficial trans social club mascot.Brownley, too, says the trans social club will persist as long as she has any say in the matter.
