“By ignoring the need for interim housing to bring people immediately off the streets, we have turned our streets into waiting rooms,” she said.During a town hall meeting on Saturday, residents and business owners recalled gang activity, people using or selling drugs, drinking or acting aggressively – including stealing from shop owners – outside the hotel when it operated as a Project Roomkey facility.
Angat Gaada, whose family owns property next to the Mayfair, said in an interview that during Project Roomkey, people kept damaging their convenience store, and a manager quit because he felt unsafe. Members of the Bass administration have maintained that what they’re proposing will be different from Project Roomkey, a program that focused solely on getting people housed during the COVID-19 emergency without providing comprehensive services.
