Irving has played this season in the final year of the four-year, $136.5 million deal he signed with the Nets during 2019 free agency. He considered entering free agency last summer, but instead exercised the player option on his deal to guarantee his salary this season . with the controversial superstar who played just 143 of a potential 278 games during four seasons with the Nets.
Based on NBA contractual limits, the Mavericks are eligible to offer Irving an extension up to $78.6 million over two years before the league’s fiscal year ends June 30, but general manager Nico Harrison has also stated intent to contract discussions with Irving until after the playoffs.
