Because it was just a pitch, it might not seem like a demonstration of a quarterback’s ability, but Shurmur said the timing on it was critical because he had to freeze the defense with a fake handoff to rookie running back Darwin Thompson as Hardman came around. Shurmur showed some niftiness while scrambling on several rushes, including a first-down run on a 3rd and 9 with 14:07 left in the third quarter.
While playing 32 snaps or 44% of the plays, he completed a team-high 11 passes while throwing two touchdowns. But he did have an awful interception against zone coverage — the only turnover of the game for the Chiefs — to a player with the football DNA to match Shurmur’s. Mahomes took just eight snaps but looked spectacular, completing all four of his passes, including a pinpoint 36-yard throw to Travis Kelce. Henne was in there for the fewest snaps among all the quarterbacks, taking just five.
