Late loss spoils Fernando Tatis Jr.'s pinch-hitting heroics; Padres lose 3 of 4 in Philadelphia to open unofficial start of season's second half
The Padres scored first again. They added on one run at a time to build on their lead.
Sunday was the third time in the four-game series the Phillies came back to win a game in which the Padres scored first and second time the Phillies overcame a 3-0 deficit to do so. They scored in the 10th when Juan Soto’s sacrifice fly drove in Trent Grisham, who began the inning at second base and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Xander Bogaerts made it 2-0 with a one-out homer in the fourth inning, and in the fifth Grisham followed Matt Carpenter’s leadoff double with a one-out double to make it 3-0. But Grisham was again standing on second after Kim and Soto made outs. The Padres don’t blow leads at an inordinate rate. Their 23rd loss in a game they led at one point is tied for 10th-most in baseball. On the season, they have won 35 of the 52 games in which they scored first, a 67 percent rate just off the MLB average.A number of their come-from-ahead losses have come when the Padres failed to add onto an early lead. Recently, the bullpen was largely responsible for would-be wins vanishing.
The only hit Lugo allowed in the first four innings was a triple off Soto’s glove in the second inning.
