Bringing back Jimmy Garoppolo is the right move for the 49ers right now. But what about for later?
Let’s be clear: The 49ers are a better team with Garoppolo backing up Lance. It helps their Super Bowl chances this season.But just because Garoppolo’s return makes the team better doesn’t mean that this isn’t a combustible situation. And just because the 49ers have a better shot at winning the Super Bowl this season doesn’t mean their future isn’t put in some jeopardy by this move.
No matter what Shanahan says, Garoppolo’s return increases the pressure on Lance. This is professional football, so whether that pressure is undue or not is for you to decide. Of course, Shanahan repeatedly dismissed the notion of possible quarterback controversy on Tuesday. That kind of talk — which we heard last year — is only for the fans and media, he said.
And while I think Garoppolo’s return to the Niners should be seen as an indictment on himself, his agents, the 49ers, and Nate Sudfeld — the $2 Million Man who was originally set to back up Lance this season but was cut Tuesday — it’s fair to wonder if Lance played a role in it, too.
