She led San Marcos to the San Diego Section Open Division championship, beating Point Loma on penalty kicks with Prych making the first shot
On a chilly, blustery afternoon, Gabrielle Prych is sitting in the shade on a concrete bench in front of San Marcos High. Her sweatshirt, blue with a maize-colored block M stitched across the front, lets you know she’ll be playing soccer at the University of Michigan.
What Prych pulled off in a Southern California regional quarterfinal playoff game against Villa Park last season was borderline hard to believe. She had suffered a badly sprained ankle and it was questionable if she could play. Of the two-minute, score-and-hobble-off-the-field performance, Prych said, “That was so bizarre. I can’t believe that happened. That was one of my favorite experiences.”
“It’s her ability to finish, the way she reads the game, her movement off the ball. That’s the final third that separates her,” said Hughes. “Her IQ, understanding positioning and spacing, understanding where to put herself to make her dangerous, that’s what separates her more than saying she’s 5-10 and a strong athlete.”
“I’m very passionate about the game,” she said. “Honestly, I just love playing. When I play the game or practice, I never want to come off the field. I never want practice to end.”
