A record 285 people were stabbed to death in the year to end-March 2018

YOUSEF MAKKI and Jodie Chesney, two 17-year-olds, were stabbed to death this past weekend. Mr Makki was killed near Manchester, while Ms Chesney was murdered in east London. Their deaths reflect a broader trend: knife crimes are on the rise across Britain.

Data from the Home Office show that 285 people were stabbed to death in England and Wales in the 12 months to March 31st, 2018, the highest number since records began in 1946. The overall homicide rate rose to 1.24 per 100,000 people, up from 0.89 in 2015, though still well below its recent peak of more than 1.5 in the early 2000s.
