The fifteenth time is the charm.
The wild night in the Capitol wasn’t over. A McCarthy ally called for a vote to adjourn until Monday, and as the motion looked like it would pass, McCarthy and several other Republicans appeared to change their votes to stop it. The adjournment vote then failed and it was on to ballot number 15. This time, Biggs,and other holdouts all voted “present,” sealing a victory for McCarthy just after midnight.
If these proceedings are a sign of anything, it’s that even with his newfound power, McCarthy will be beholden to the whims of this even more extreme faction of his party. He leads only a four-seat majority in a caucus that has shown itself to be more than willing to bury its own. McCarthy is conservative, he has allied himself with Trump and that MAGA wing of the party, and looked the other way when Republican members pushed extreme, democracy-threatening agendas. Many of these right-wing lawmakers recognized this from the get-go Even so, his detractors showed they were comfortable allowing for complete government dysfunction. For four days, the 118th Congress stood in limbo, the legislative body could not pass bills or respond to emergencies.
But however dire and tenuous McCarthy’s tenure may be, this is still a dream realized for the Republican, whose ambitions for the speakership have a long jagged history. HeJohn Boehner,
