The long-irrelevant Brooklyn Nets have jumped 95 spots on the Forbes SportsMoney Index after signing Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving
The Nets’ off-season coup made for the biggest win on the SMI, despite a flurry of NBA trades and signings that sent megastars like Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul to new teams. Westbrook climbed six spots to No. 15 after his trade to the Houston Rockets while the Oklahoma City Thunder, his former team, fell 55 spots to No. 91. Davis’ long-awaited landing in Los Angeles boosted him 38 spots to No. 42, putting him just ahead of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.
Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez both make their SMI debuts in the list’s top 50. Other athletes joining the ranks are the Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid and Boston Red Sox’s J.D. Martinez . But no new player sits higher on the list than Russell Wilson, who, at No. 11 overall, is the third-highest-ranked athlete on the index . The 30-year-old quarterback signed a four-year, $140 million extension with the Seattle Seahawks in April, making him the NFL’s highest-paid player and the sixth-highest-paid athlete in the world.
Other NFL player debuts include DeMarcus Lawrence , Saquon Barkley and Khalil Mack . All three not only rank among the NFL’s highest-paid players, but they also ply their trade for some of the league’s most valuable teams in the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Chicago Bears, respectively.
