Kerry Washington had one request when boarding her new show, ‘Unprisoned,’ as both star and executive producer: Delroy Lindo had to play her father. “He’s been one of my acting heroes for a long, long time.”

, Lindo and Washington make for a bitingly funny, beautifully realistic father-daughter duo. The series centers on Washington’s Paige, a single mom and relationship therapist whose routine is rocked by her father Edwin’s release from a 17-year stint in prison. Edwin has been in and out of the system since Paige was a kid; she’d gotten used to things going a certain way, and more pertinently, to not relying on him. But this time he says he wants to do things differently.
“We try to portray a relationship that’s immensely close, but where you don’t know each other that well,” says Washington, an executive producer through her Simpson Street banner. “That happens in a lot of families for a lot of different reasons.” The series mines poignant comedy out of its premise, one rooted in an issue of tremendous consequence in American life right now.
Washington and Lindo bring gravitas to their dynamic, a dramatic heft familiar for fans of their decades-long careers. But more surprisingly, the actors also get to let loose. Lindo brings a laconic sweetness to a man struggling to adjust to modern life, while Washington wryly explores how hard it can be to hold everything together amid so much change and uncertainty.
“Neither of us think of ourselves, or are thought of generally in the industry, as comedic actors,” Washington says. “It was really fun to step into this world together.
