Mandaloun entered in San Diego Handicap, a prep race for $1 million Pacific Classic in September
Mandaloun ran second to the late Medina Spirit in last year’s Derby but was declared the victor when the Bob Baffert-trained winner was disqualified for a drug positive.
The San Diego Handicap is actually the second feature on Saturday’s card, which is headed by the Grade I, $400,000 Bing Crosby. Both races are for older horses on the main track. The nine-horse field for the San Diego includes Royal Ship — who ran second to Country Grammer in the 2021 Gold Cup after beating him six weeks earlier in the Grade II Californian at Santa Anita — and reigning Pacific Classic champion Tripoli.
