I am the quintessential definition of someone who is woke. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ own general counselas, “the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.” I can easily accept that definition as-is. I actually feel good about having wokeness. I am, after all, a person who recognizes objective truths.
I’d rather like to recognize that woke people have, ourselves, made matters worse and suggest that maybe this is adding fuel to the anti-woke fires on the right. We have done this by allowing the concept of woke to morph into something that isn’t woke at all though our internal game of “Telephone.” These may be examples of good intentions taken to extremes, but they are nonetheless grossly disproportionate reactions to a range of ideas in the public square. And those over-reactions are hurting our own cause. They alienate people who have different ideas from us from ever considering thinking like us. Instead, we turn them off like a light bulb; exactly the opposite of what we should be doing. No wonder the right is hunkering down in defense of their positions.
