A Catholic nonprofit that shelters asylum-seekers in El Paso says Attorney General Ken Paxton ’s drive to shut it down threatens religious freedom across the state. An attorney for Annunciation House told a state district judge on Monday that Paxton served the shelter with an “illegal” document request to “manufacture” a reason to shut it down. Paxton has accused the shelter, which has housed asylum seekers for decades, of operating as a “stash house” and taking part in “human smuggling.
