In one of two fires in Hudson County Friday, two people died in a two-alarm blaze that broke out just after midnight Friday in a single-family home on Hamilton Avenue in Kearny, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday afternoon.
Just after 12 a.m. Friday, the Kearny Fire Department was notified of a fire at 56 Hamilton Ave. Two victims were discovered in the home with serious injuries. Martin Wilson, 61, was brought to University Hospital and pronounced dead at approximately 1:20 a.m., while Mary Beth Guenther, 58, was transported to Clara Maas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 12 p.m. Friday, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
A preliminary investigation determined that the fire broke out in the basement, but the cause has not been determined. The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, with assistance by the Kearny fire and police departments, are investigating the fire, but the Suarez said foul play is not suspected.
