Gobbles and Cranberries, two turkeys from BatesTurkeyFarm, won't be making their way to a Thanksgiving table any time soon. Twitter users picked the turkey's names this year, and Alabama GovernorKayIvey 'pardoned' them today. More about this tradition:
Gov. Kay Ivey 'pardons' turkeys Gobbles and Cranberry from the Bates Turkey Farm at the Governor's Mansion on Thursday, carrying on a tradition started in 1949. Gov. Kay Ivey today continued a Thanksgiving tradition that Alabama governors have carried on since 1949, issuing a “pardon” to turkeys from the Bates Turkey Farm.
“After carefully reviewing all the information provided to me about this pair of turkeys, I believe we have made a decision,” Ivey said. “So today, by the powers vested in me as the governor of the state of Alabama, I am hereby granting a full pardon to Gobbles and Cranberry.” William C. “Bill” Bates, founder of the farm in Fort Deposit, started the tradition with Gov. James “Big Jim” Folsom.Ivey started her remarks today by thanking voters for her decisive win in Tuesday’s election. The governor starts her second four-year term in January. She has been governor since April 2017.
