At the end of a final round defined for much of the day by the relative unknowns vying for a crown, a familiar, popular face emerged as the PGA Championship winner.
Justin Thomas staged a massive comeback — aided by a stunning collapse from 54- -hole leader Mito Pereira — to triumph at Tulsa’s Southern Hills. Thomas sealed the victory by defeating Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff. Thomas used a sterling tee shot to take a lead on the second playoff hole, staged at No. 17, and he again drove well on the subsequent hole, the 18th, to put himself in position for the win.
Having previously won the PGA Championship in 2017, the 29-year-old Thomas now has two major titles to his name, joining a select group to have done so before the age of 30. Having started the day seven shots behind Pereira, he tied John Mahaffey, who performed his heroics in 1978, for the largest final-round comeback in PGA Championship history.
Pereira, the tournament leader since early in the third round, had a three-shot lead to start Sunday, and a one-shot advantage by the time he got to the 18th hole, but he put his tee shot in a creek and made double-bogey to fall into a toe for third place with Cameron Young.
