Nassau County Clerk of Court officials are warning of scam phone calls that ask people to pay money or be arrested.
Already this week, Mitch Keiter, Chief of Staff and Operations at the Clerk’s Office, says calls are going out that have real court staff names asking people to pay for missing jury duty.“The clerk’s office will never call anybody attempting to collect money or vice versa arrest,” Keiter said.
He said another similar call went out to another couple this week and the couple got scammed out of thousands of dollars. “The victim lost $7,500 and it is said that they were going to use that to purchase a home,” he said. “It was told to us that they were going to use it to purchase a new home.”“When they got them on the phone, or they made the callback, they told them if they would hang up that call, they would be arrested at that point,” Keither said.Nassau County says if you get a call from someone who says they are with the clerk’s office demanding money or they will arrest you, to hang up and call 911.
