In the movie series, his vainglorious commentary and charismatic nature made for amusing comic relief and established Malcolm as a franchise favorite.
It was actually Jeff Goldblum himself who prevented the original escape scene from happening. Not only did Goldblum push for the character to remain in the Jurassic Park script, but it was also he who wanted Malcolm to exhibit heroism when other lives were at stake. Goldblum's idea to have Malcolm break the road flare open and lead the dinosaur away was an attempt to avoid his character appearing cowardly or villainous.
There is no specific reason for why this scene was cut from the beginning of the movie, but its absence could have been for a number of reasons. For one, Spielberg's Jurassic Park had to pick which key scenes, characters, and developments of the novel would be best for the big screen, and it may have been cut due to the pacing of the film.
