Crowds gathered on the capital lawn for music and inspiring speakers. The event was organized by the Blacks United in Leadership and Diversity Business Resource Group.
“We are highlighting black excellence really. We’re focusing on the past, present and future,” said Undra Simpson from the group also known as 'B.U.I.L.D.' Juneteenth is a day that’s been known and celebrated in many parts of the country long before 2021, when it became a Federal Holiday. June 19th, 1865, is the date when news of the end of the Civil War and freedom finally reached African slaves in Texas.
“It’s really celebrated down south because it started in Texas and then it migrated around because people from Texas migrated around the country and spread the holiday,” said Simpson.“There are too many people suffering and struggling and those of us in public service, we’ve got work to do,” said Megan Matthews, the Acting Director for the Washington State Office of Equity. The hope is the Juneteenth holiday will bring remembrance of the past and a better future.
