Activists want the ability to create a free market for college athletes. A judge ruled the NCAA can continue to limit compensation that is unrelated to education.

In a highly anticipated federal antitrust case challenging the NCAA’s amateurism model, a federal judge in Oakland, Calif., ruled that the NCAA can no longer limit compensation or benefits for college athletes to those “related to education.”

But while the ruling was ostensibly a win for the plaintiffs, a group of former college basketball and football players, it may have been the best loss imaginable for the NCAA and its model.
