A week after a federal court gave Oakland the go-ahead to clear one of its most prominent homeless encampments, the judge in the case reversed his decision Friday, allowing unhoused people to remain at the Wood Street camp until the city opens more shelter beds for the residents who will be displaced.that the city could move forward with disbanding the encampment after barring it from doing so in January.
In his most recent order, Orrick wrote that he had agreed to allow the city to clear the camp only if it could provide shelter for residents, including at a new “cabin community.” Upon learning the cabins weren’t ready, he ruled the city is prohibited from moving forward until “the cabins are open and the other conditions are met.”
