A judge dismissed one of two felony charges against former White House counsel Greg Craig today
Greg Craig, a who served as the first White House counsel in the Obama administration, scored a pretrial win Tuesday as a judge threw out one of two charges in a false-statement case against him stemming from former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

The judge’s dismissal of the FARA false-statement charge reduces Craig’s possible prison sentence to a maximum of five years instead of 10 years, but barely shaves back the maximum fine he could face to $250,000, down from $260,000. However, because of federal sentencing practices, limiting the case to a single count could have little effect on Craig’s ultimate sentence if he is convicted.
Craig’s attorneys argued that because he wasn’t compelled to answer the FARA unit’s questions, he couldn’t be penalized legally for any omissions, but the judge said that given the clear focus of the Justice Department’s questions, Craig was on notice that if he chose to respond, his answers needed to be complete.
