A federal judge delays Michael Flynn's sentencing to wait for the Russia IG report
A federal judge Wednesday agreed to postpone next month’s sentencing for former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn until after the release of a much-anticipated inspector general report about the FBI’s Russia investigation.
Flynn had been on track to be sentenced Dec. 18 after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, though the retired Army general's new lawyers are trying to get the entire case dismissed because of what they say is “egregious government misconduct.”District Judge Emmet Sullivan hasn’t indicated how he will handle Flynn’s shift in defense strategies.
from federal prosecutors and Flynn's attorneys filed Tuesday night asking reshuffle his sentencing schedule in part because of a Justice Department inspector general report that’s slated for release Dec. 9.That inspector general report is expected to criticize Justice Department leaders and low-level FBI officials who worked on the Russia probe that ultimately gave way to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, according to several media reports.
The DOJ and Flynn attorneys cited media reports about the timing of the IG report’s release in asking Sullivan for a delay to several fast-approaching deadlines tied to the sentencing, including a DOJ supplemental memo that’s due Monday and one from Flynn with a Dec. 10 deadline.
