JSO confirmed that an officer was shot in the parking lot of Baptist Health South Tuesday night.

ActionNewsJax.com News StaffJACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an officer was shot in the parking lot of Baptist Health South Tuesday night.According to Sheriff T.K. Waters, at around 9:30 p.m., security at Baptist Health South was made aware of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. However, when the security officer tried to engage, the suspect drove around the parking lot at a high speed, and that is when security called JSO for backup.

When JSO officers arrived, the suspect continued to race around the parking lot, hitting multiple parked cars. The suspect shot one round at a JSO patrol car, but officers did not return fire. Instead, they orchestrated a pit maneuver and stopped the car. When an officer tried to engage the car after the pit maneuver, the suspect shot out the back window and hit the officer twice, once of which was in the face. At that point, the other five officers on scene returned fire and killed the suspect. The officer shot was life-flighted to UF Health, where he is in critical but stable condition. JSO said that this is the fifth officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year, and this is the third time an officer was shot in the line of duty.

Sheriff Waters also told Action News Jax that the officer shot graduated from the same class as Officer Malik Daricaud, who was shot and suffered critical injuries during a traffic stop on March 19.At this time, Baptist Health South is no longer on lockdown, but for safety reasons, it went onto one when the altercation occurred. The hospital announced on Twitter that all patients and staff are safe.
