Garcia: Josh Primo story carries disturbing echoes of former Cowboy Lance Rentzel

The Spurs waived the 19-year-old guard last Friday, only six days before Dr. Hillary Cauthen filed a lawsuit in Bexar County District Court against Primo and the team.Rentzel was handsome, bright, articulate and popular with his teammates. He was a skilled piano player and singer who put out a single on Columbia Records. He was married to the glamorous singer/actress Joey Heatherton.
In January of this year, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich lauded Primo’s “uncanny maturity” and “steady demeanor.”According to Cauthen, however, a month before Popovich offered those plaudits, Primo exposed his genitals to her for the first time during a private counseling session. Her lawsuit alleges that he ultimately exposed himself to her nine times and these incidents “grew progressively more extreme.
Eight months after Rentzel’s arrest, the Dallas Cowboys gave up a future draft pick to acquire him from the Vikings.
